CALLING ALL NATIONALITIES!
EVEN IF YOU ARE NOT ICELANDIC, WE CAN HELP YOU.

Genealogy Center

For the fifth year, we will offer free genealogy research. It will at the same location as last year, at the home owned
by Tim & Susan Sigurdson Powers, NE of the Fire Hall in Mountain.

Genealogy has been very important for Icelanders. Sagas and stories of ancestors has been a way of life for
centuries in Iceland. During the long dark winters, many stories were told of family and their experiences.
Records kept in the past are today being used for genetic research in Iceland.

Interest in family history has followed Icelanders that moved to North America and it is a reason why we have a
Genealogy Center each year. Our visitors from Iceland during the Deuce of August Celebration sometimes are
searching for cousins in the Mountain area and what excitement that provides for the community.

It is a labor of love, working on family history. An added bonus is cousins from across the ocean meeting. Visiting
with Icelanders and Americans is enjoyable as well.

We realize that we are just a small part of the genealogy effort at the celebration. Just visiting with each other is
where the action is. Start a conversation with our visitors. Last year many Icelandic and Americans cousins met
because someone started a conversation.

For our visitors from Iceland we have a special message. “We want you to feel welcomed as special guests when
you visit us. If you are looking for cousins please contact us before you come to the US. We would like very much
to aid in your search and with a little time we can make your visit a special memory for you.”

For all the visitors from the US and Canada at the celebration, we want to make your visit a special memory too.
Bring your information or contact us in advance of the celebration.

In conclusion, many thanks are due for the many people who have helped the Genealogy Center over the last 5
years. We had a special visit from Nelson Gerrard of Gimli and last year Halfdan Helgason of Iceland helped us
with live audio and visual communication over the internet. If there are other genealogists that would like to help in
any way, please let us know.
